At the age of 91, Dame Agatha Christie passed away peacefully in her sleep, leaving behind a literary legacy that is still revered and enjoyed by mystery fans around the world today. In her prime, Christie was the best-selling author of all time, outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare. But for all her success, she was a notoriously private person, shunning the public eye whenever possible. Even now, more than 40 years after her death, we know very little about the woman behind the books.
Agatha Christie’s first biography wasn’t released until after her death. She had refused to publish an autobiography during her lifetime, but she was secretly writing one.
Later, several authors have published more biographies of her. The latest one is Agatha Christie: An Elusive Woman by Lucy Worsley.
The name of the biography Agatha Christie has written by herself is Agatha Christie: An Autobiography. The latest biography book on Agatha Christie was written by Lucy Worsley and is named Agatha Christie: An Elusive Woman.
Elusive Woman is an exciting new biography of Agatha Christie that attempts to shed some light on the life of this enigmatic figure. Drawing on previously unseen letters and diaries, as well as interviews with Christie’s family and friends, biographer Laura Thompson paints a portrait of a complex woman who was as contradictory as she was talented.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Elusive Woman is the way it explores Christie’s relationship with her first husband, Colonel Archibald Christie. The couple met when Agatha was just 18 years old, and Archie was 36; he was a dashing pilot in the Royal Flying Corps, and she was a sheltered young woman from a wealthy background. From the beginning, their relationship was tempestuous; they fought often and loud enough to be heard by their neighbors. And yet, they remained together for more than 20 years before finally divorcing in 1928.
What makes their relationship so interesting is that, despite all the fighting, they genuinely seemed to care for each other. In one particularly poignant letter that Agatha wrote to Archie during their divorce proceedings, she said: “I want you to be happy…I think you are a good man & I am very sorry for all the misery I have caused you.” It’s clear that, despite everything, there was still love there. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t enough to overcome the problems in their marriage.

It provides rare insight into the life of one of the world’s most famous mystery writers, and Worsley does an excellent job of painting a human portrait of a woman who was notoriously private.
